La Mansión is a leading operator of casual dining restaurants in Mexico.
Founded in 1957, La Mansión operates nearly a dozen restaurants and nine franchises, catering to the business and family-dining segments. Its principal business is La Mansión steakhouse chain, one of the best-known brands in the industry, contributing close to 60% of the company’s revenue. More recently, the group has developed other concepts including international cuisine (Casa Ávila) and airport restaurants (Cucara Macara and Sala 21).
A leading player with significant growth and profit improvement potential, La Mansión is a strong platform to drive the consolidation of the fragmented Mexican restaurant market. According to Mexico’s national chamber of restaurants, the industry comprises 243,000 formal locations, 96% of which are small and mid-sized companies, mostly family-run establishments with relatively unsophisticated management and operating practices. The market totaled 154 billion pesos (US$14 billion) in 2005 and has grown faster than the overall economy in the last five years.
While La Mansión is recognized across the country, its restaurants are concentrated in Mexico City and surrounding areas. The strategy is to build value in the business by institutionalizing operations, investing in IT systems and rationalizing the group structure, while developing new concepts and rolling out existing concepts in growth areas outside Mexico City. The company also plans to acquire other leading Mexican restaurant chains to increase the size of the business and achieve greater economies of scale.
To drive the operating and growth initiatives, Advent has appointed a new CEO, Javier Gavilan, who has a proven track record of success in the restaurant sector. Mr. Gavilan most recently led the development and successful sale of Advent portfolio company Aerocomidas, the leading operator of restaurants and bars in Mexican airports.
